Sports Movies

Well Maegan is currently indulging herself in Pride and Prejudice and I couldn't take it. I am with my brother-in-law in that there are a few movies that I just can't make it through and Pride and Prejudice is certainly one of them which means that Dense I mean Sense and Sensibility and Anne of Green Gables are in this category as well. For those of you that care, at the top of Maegan's list is Batman Begins which happens to be one of my most favorite movies. Anyway while she is watching her movie I began to think about movies that I like which brings me to this post. As many people know I enjoy sports. Whether it be playing or watching or trivia I am kind of a sports junkie. I also enjoy a good sports movie. I have thought long and hard and I think that I have ranked my ten favorite sports movies of all time and thought that I would put them here. So with no further adieu here we go:
10. Teen wolf - A small scrawny basketball player on his high school basketball team. Welcome to my freshmen and sophomore years of high school. I often dreamed that I would be able to turn into a werewolf so that I could show my coach the real beast inside of me. Also I attribute all of my dancing success to that werewolf claw dance....ingenious.
9. Coach Carter - Unfortunately this movie has its share of questionable language, and the acting isn't great, but I actually really enjoyed the ending and the whole story.
8. Field of Dreams - This is one of the earliest sports movies that I remember watching and the only movie that has inspired me to read the book that the movie was based on.
7. The Greatest Game Ever Played - Any movie with the line "easy pezzy lemon squezey" has got to be in the top ten of any category.
6. Miracle - How can the greatest moment in United States sports history not make it into my top ten?
5. Rudy - I hate to admit it but this is probably one of the only movies that I have actually had to fight back tears during certain parts of the show. A movie that can do that belongs in this list.
4. The Sandlot - You can never go wrong with this show plus it has some of the best lines in history including the famous "You play ball like a girl." Let us not forget that Benny the Jet Rodriguez also ends up playing in the majors for none other than the Los Angeles Dodgers.
3. Remember the Titans - This was the first movie in Disney's phase of making sports movies based on true stories and it was by far the best. There really isn't anything about this show that I don't enjoy.
2. Hoosiers -Jimmy Chitwood and underhand free throws. This is bar none the ultimate basketball movie
1. The Natural - No surprise here to anyone that knows me. I must admit that the gap between this movie and numbers 2,3,4 have narrowed but I have got to keep The Natural at #1 if only for the fact that I have seen it about a million times and it still gives me cold chills when the ball sails into the stadium lights.
Honorable mention: Invincible, The Rookie, Glory Road (All part of the Disney phase), Little Giants (who could forget the genius play "The Annexation of Puerto Rico"), Mighty Ducks (mainly because of the memory of my cousin Peter giving me hugs of excitement after the ducks would win at the end of the movie), The legend of Bagger Vance (I did work on a golf course for 6 years), and Rocky IV (The first Rocky movie I ever saw).
Well there you have it. Unfortunately it didn't take me two hours to write this blog which means that Pride and Prejudice is still on the screen, I just can't take hearing anymore of that Darcy fellow. Maybe I'll go see what is new on espn.com.

Well Doug, Isaac can certainly sympathize. I however am totally with Maeggy on this one. But we do agree on Remember the Titans and Batman Begins those are both in my top 10.

So I agree with most of your list except The Natural. I know it has special meaning to you, but seriously number 1? That movie doesn't even belong in the top 10. I was disheartened to see Rudy at 4, but I can't really argue with your numbers 2 and 3 (though Rudy gets better every time I watch it).

I'm with you on Rudy, but not so much on the Natural. I was pleasantly surprised to see Teen Wolf in your top 10. I loved that movie, but I figured I was the only person alive who would admit it.

What about We are Marshall? We just rented that one a week or so ago, and I really liked it.

Charlotte makes a good point about We are Marshall (though I think it should get honorable mention). I recognized Rudy as number 4 because I just can't see how you put it behind Sandlot. I love Sandlot, but we're talking about Rudy here.

Happy Gilmore!!!

I wonder if those same comments about Rudy would be coming from you if you weren't moving to South Bend? I debated with Happy Gilmore and should have put it in at least as an honorable mention. And you know Space Jam was a fun one. In defense of The Natural I want you to know that ESPN ranked it as the sixth best sports show ever. Only Hoosiers (#1) was ranked higher of movies that are on my list.

Great, great, great blog. I loved every minute of it. You make me very proud, Doug.

What about Dodgeball? Not a serious movie, but funny. It could get an honorable mention, but certainly not a top ten movie.

And if you are looking for something out of the ordinary, then consider "Rad". The first X-game type sport that was made into a movie. I watched the big race at the end about a million times.

Finally, the fight sceen of Karate kid is a classic. The music is awesome, the girl is pretty (when I was in elementary school), and Mr. Miagi is magical. And who can forget, "Get 'em a body bag, Johnny!" and the annoying laugh of the bad guy's sidekick.

What about the Benchwarmers? Definately a top 10 in my book. I may have to make my own list.

So totally off the subject, but I just realized you have the same background as me... Don't know where my brain has been, and don't know why I haven't noticed it before... Oh well... Great minds think alike I suppose... :)

Hi Doug & Maegan! I just found your blog, lucky me!

I agree with most of the movies on the list, except that on my list Rudy would be #1 for sure.

Oh and I had to tell you, I remember in some class I had at SUU when Devin Esplin gave an oral report on Field of Dreams. He seriously stood up and talked about Field of Dreams for like 8 minutes and he's probably the only one in the class who got an A on the assignment. Basically I think the teacher had a big fat crush on him, but hey, that's life.
